This post refers to a comment received from Darcy, on a post I made over a year ago on Global Positioning of Child Predators. It has taken me a while but, it is true that there was a case against Bryce L. Ewing.
Given his age (about 80), I can see why the judge bought the Alzheimer’s disease plea. However, if his Alzheimer’s is so bad that he isn’t competent to stand trial, then he probably shouldn’t be living alone and certainly not driving (if he is).
I am hoping that his Alzheimer’s will make it impossible for him to repeat any criminal acts that he may have committed, due to constant supervision. I am very sorry for the families and children who were hurt by this man. At least there is public record of the charges that will show up on criminal background checks. Not that anyone would hire someone with Alzheimer’s, but if that was a ruse–then at least he shouldn’t be able to get a job working with children anywhere.
It’s truly unfortunate that no victims came forward earlier, when competency might not have been an issue. I personally don’t care if he has Alzheimer’s. Automatically enter a plea of “not guilty” then and let the facts and testimony fall where they may. I don’t think it should matter if a legal adult is “incompetent”. If they are capable of committing a crime against another person and that can be proved by evidence, then the person is a danger, regardless of their competency and society should be protected from them.
The doves are gone… June 18, 2008

I guess the young ones finally had the strength to fly further. I see no sign of them this morning, except for all the poop they left behind on my rail. Who knew?!
Well, it was fun while it lasted. I guess I will just have to go back to bear watching and chipmunk watching. I’ll have to post about the bear we had in our yard a couple of weeks back. later.
Doves living on my deck…and I don’t mean Unilever employees! June 17, 2008

But maybe they are spies…Hmmmm….. For some odd reason, two fledgling doves and their mommy have taken up residence on my deck. The babies sit all day waiting for mommy to bring them dinner. THAT’s an interesting sight. I have never had the pleasure of witnessing a mother bird regurgitating dinner for her babies before, now I have seen it more times than I care to count. Actually, it really is very interesting and sweet. They huddle together, basking in the sun on the top of the deck rail. Occasionally, they fly down to the deck to peck around.
I was worried that they couldn’t fly yet, but last night one of them was up in the tree with it’s mama. I couldn’t figure out where the other one was and was worried that a cat or possum got him. But they were both back this morning. We don’t have a bird feeder that has anything doves would be interested in, so I’m not sure why they have set up shop on our deck.
The boys are loving it though. I have thought about putting out something in the yard so the mama won’t have to fly so far from her babies to find enough food for both of them. She has to be exhausted. She is gone all day, comes back and feeds them both, then flies off again for hours (I assume, in search of food). I don’t really know enough about birds to know if this is a bad idea or not. I mean, I guess we feed the finches and the humming birds and occasionally put out corn for the squirrels, but I’m not sure what doves eat anyway.
I have wondered where the papa is, because I have heard that mourning doves mate for life. So far, I haven’t seen him though. Maybe he is back at the nest with the new eggs. I know from the aviary we had, at the nursing home that I worked at for a time, that the doves bred like rabbits. Unfortunately, in that scenario, the male doves would kick the babies out of the nest just before the female laid new eggs. Then they would peck the babies to death by plucking all the feathers out and letting the babies starve. It was really brutal. I finally had to ask the company to take the doves and the canaries out of the aviary and just leave the finches, because it was so upsetting to the residents. I suppose, in the wild, they spend so much time searching for food to feed themselves and the babies that they already have that they don’t have time to mate and make more babies.
Anybody know enough about doves to explain why they aren’t in a nest somewhere? Too big for the both of them? I can’t remember how many eggs the ones in the aviary laid at one time, but maybe they don’t usually have twins so there is no room at the inn, so to speak?
Response to commenters on Sharon Tate’s murderer’s possible release… June 16, 2008

The main problem that I have with ANY murderer being released for any reason is that anyone who is capable of the murder of a total stranger for no particular reason is not someone with a conscience. That person is a sociopath. A sociopath does not have the capability to be rehabilitated, “saved” or whatever. They can learn to function in society, side by side with people who do have consciences. But they are incapable of feeling true remorse. They are fantastic actors and are usually highly intelligent and manipulative.
In order for a person to be saved, in the Christian faith, they must first be capable of being truly sorry for what they have done. I don’t believe that she is actually capable of that. I don’t even have to know her to make that judgement. If it was a crime of passion or even a hate crime, I could think that she might have come around or even been mentally ill and treated with the right medication, may have seen the error of her ways. I’m not buying that.
Maybe she should have picked a religion that you can acheive salvation by “good works”. But last time I checked, that isn’t the case with Christianity. So her claim of being a changed person, doesn’t really fly for me. I realize that many may not agree with me on this. That’s o.k.
The bottom line is that in a state with the death penalty, she would already be dead and it wouldn’t have cost the taxpayers a bundle to keep her alive all these years (good point, Carla). She was given life in prison instead. I don’t care what she has done since then, or how much she has changed. The penalty for what she did, to her victims, was to give up her life of freedom for the (at least 3) humans that she killed. I don’t think that even begins to cover it.
She does not deserve to be released from prison, under any circumstance. Why should her life and “compassion” for her be put above the victims families and what they have had to suffer with the loss of their loved ones? (Carl, “Pig” and David: my sentiments, exactly!)
I don’t feel bad that I don’t feel bad for her. I’m not going to apologize for that. No one else should have to either (I would question the sanity of anyone who could just blythely forgive her, Dolores, so don’t feel bad). It’s not our job to feel bad for her.
My father died from cancer. I can tell you from first hand experience that if she is really too sick to harm anyone else before she dies, then her quality of life won’t be dramatically improved whether she is in a prison hospital or a regular hospital. Why should she have any more comfort or peace in her death than Sharon and the other victims did? If she’s really a born again Christian, then she’ll find peace in the next life and that is enough as far as I’m concerned.
Sharon Tate’s murderer to possibly be released from prison… June 14, 2008

Compassionate release because she is dying from cancer. She didn’t show any compassion for Sharon Tate (or Sharon’s unborn 8 1/2 month child). I don’t care what kind of Christian she has become. The only reason she didn’t get the death penalty and is alive right now to be dying from cancer is because California law was already compassionate once. She is supposed to be serving life in prison. How is it life in prison if they are going to let her out because she is dying? Isn’t that the whole point of LIFE IN PRISON?! You DIE THERE!!!
Frankly, I am sick to death of the leniency we show criminals of all types. She is one of the most infamous murderers in history. Just because her name is overshadowed by the better known Charles Manson name. She is the one who stabbed Sharon Tate and her unborn child. This wasn’t a one time, drug induced crime of passion. This was a cold, calculated, sociopathic act that was not her first murder, or her last since she participated in the La Bianca murders the next day.
I say let her ROT. She took three lives and participated in several other murders. She deserves to die in prison. Where was the compassion for her victims? Someone that sick cannot be rehabilitated and I think her “born again Christian” crap is just that. A load of crap. She was denied parole 11 other times. So what has changed? She’s dying. So?! That’s what she deserves. What about compassion for the Tate and La Bianca families?

Working at home June 9, 2008

My first day working at home went o.k. It’s really going to take some balancing. I have to make sure the oldest is tired out and ready to watch a video. It helped to take them outside to run around for a while before lunch. I have definitely got to sit down and draw up a schedule otherwise the boys and the housework will eat up all my time and getting in my hours will be impossible.
Have a good night!
All Grown Up? June 8, 2008

This really doesn’t have much to do with the topic of home, which is what I am supposed to be posting about this month. So, we made a couple of hundred dollars on our thrift sale. Still have a lot of stuff to get rid of though.
But here’s the real comment/question: Do you ever feel like everyone around you is a real grown up and you’re just a child masquerading as an adult? Sometimes I look at someone and what they have accomplished and how they carry themselves and I am subconsciously sure that they must be years my senior. Then, I am shocked to find out they are my same age or even younger!
It’s a very unsettling realization. I can’t think of another thing to say on this subject.

Has anyone ever painted their kitchen cabinets? I happen to like mine, but they need a facelift as far as the finish goes. Has anybody ever done this and had a good result? Any tips? Warnings?
I was going to use something called a Kitchen Cabinet Finish by McCloskey, but the store where I originally saw it is getting rid of that brand so they didn’t have the appropriate tint base for the color I wanted. I went with a Dutch Boy kitchen cabinet paint instead, but I’m a little nervous about it because the other stuff was supposed to be “self-leveling” and dry to a lacquer type finish. I just don’t know about the Dutch Boy stuff.
Let me know if anyone has any advice about this.
Thanks!
Final Countdown… June 5, 2008

After a frantic day of rifling through drawers and closets and pricing stuff, I am exhausted. We are supposed to have a lot of rain. We had pretty heavy rain today. I certainly hope all the work will be worth it.
Thrift sales…in with the good…out with the bad OR one man’s junk is another man’s treasure? June 4, 2008

Tomorrow the hubby and I are home all day getting ready for the big city wide thrift sale. I’m bummed because I was all excited to get rid of a bunch of stuff we never use and we are supposed to have tornados tomorrow and rain all weekend.
What am I going to do with all the plastic tupperware type stuff I am selling, now that I have bought replacement glass pyrex storage dishes? Set of 38, case of two. Egads! I barely have enough room for my recent purchase. You can’t give plastic dishes to the Goodwill store. Suggestions?
Anybody have any thrift sale horror stories they want to tell? Any really great thrift sale finds you want to brag about? If I have to hear one more person on Antiques Roadshow talk about the million dollar Indian blanket that they bought for five dollars at a yard sale, I might puke. How come I never find anything great like that? I know, they didn’t buy that at a yard sale. But man! I saw that episode and nearly choked! And to think, they had it on the back of their sofa or some darn thing like that!
I will try to reply to you lovlies that have commented on my other posts later tonight. I better go see what my hubby is doing, it sounds like he’s out in the garage building an ark.
