Looking up! February 28, 2008

Things seem to be looking up.  Apparently, she thought about what I said about how I would learn faster if she wasn’t hanging over my shoulder.  Initially, she told me there wasn’t any work that she could let me do independently, but for the past three days, that’s exactly what she has done.  I think she is a lot less stressed out too, because she is able to get some of her administrative work done and I’m working a lot faster without her standing over me.

I’m still wonked out exhausted from the stress, but if things keep going this way, I might be able to get back to normal pretty soon.

Anybody else have any good boss from hell stories?  (You guys only heard a little smidgen of what I have put up with for the past month).

About 50 million years ago, I worked as a cashier in a convenience store. I had the busiest shift and worked that shift alone. One day, I had customer’s lined up all the way around the inside of the building (at least 50-60 people, maybe more). The fairgrounds was right next door, and apparently whatever was going on there had just let out and I got slammed with business. Now, mind you, this was my 11th day in a row of working a 12hr shift. So I was a bit on the exhausted side.

In walked my district manager, the Dragon Lady, as we all called her. Well, that’s not true. I called her a bitch. But hey, if the name fits…

Anyhoo, she cut through the line and came around the counter to tell me that she was going to do an audit on my drawer.

Was she flippin’ nuts?! An audit… which takes a good 15 minutes… when I had a gazillion customers waiting in line.

I refused. I made her wait. She didn’t like that. Ask me if I care.

Later, when it was the end of my shift, I had to break down all of the empty boxes (from restocking the cooler), and take them out to the trash. It was a cold day and I was so very, very tired. So I decided to take the boxes outside to break them down. You know, use the cold air to keep me awake.

Well, it wasn’t more than 60 seconds before the Dragon Lady came running outside to yell at me and accuse me of stealing. She started grabbing all of the boxes and looked in each one before tossing them aside. I just stood there and waited for her to stop acting like an idiot. ‘Course, that was never going to happen.

So finally, I just calmly explained to her why I had taken the boxes outside, that I had worked 132 hours straight with no day off, I wasn’t in the best of humor, and I informed her that I had no desire or need to steal from the company… and, that I wasn’t taking kindly to her accusations or harrassment. I told her that she should be highly appreciative of me, and it would do her well to learn how to treat her employees with respect.

Would you believe she had the gall to continue her rant about theivery? That was all I could take. I told her to take her job and shove it up her tight ass, because I didn’t need her bullshit any longer.

Did I mention that I was tired? Not that I ever regretted my decision, it’s just that I don’t normally speak to people in that manner. I suppose she deserved it though.

Anyway, she turned red and sputtered as I walked away. I found out a couple of months later that she had been demoted to store manager.

Ha!

I’m glad to hear that things are improving for you at your new job. It sounds like someone intervened on your behalf, though. I don’t see that woman as one to back off and catch a clue all that easily. Just the same, she’s no longer looking over your shoulder, so w00t! :D

Stacy-Holy cow! What kind of a nutjob manager wants to tick off that many customers? No wonder she was demoted. Good for you that you were able to give her a piece of your mind. I sure wish I could do that.
